Genuine LMS Buffers Obtained for The Unknown Warrior

1 January, 2011 - 13:30 admin

The LMS-Patriot Project acquired a set of four genuine LMS buffers for 'The Unknown Warrior'.

Two of these buffers were fitted to the locomotive at Llangollen Railway Works and the other two were suitable for the ex-Barry scrapyard Fowler tender which was dismantled at Barry Rail Centre, in South Wales.

The buffers were found on a rail-mounted crane that was being scrapped at the GCR(N) at Ruddington. At least three of the buffers are stamped LMS, with 1930s dates that can be clearly seen. The diesel-electric powered rail-mounted crane was believed to have been built at Derby Works in 1947 and fitted with a set of loco buffers from an LMS loco that had been scrapped at Derby Works.

The LMS Patriot Project would like to thank Alex Newcombe, Operations Director at the GCR(N), for the generous donation of the buffers to the LMS-Patriot Project.
