Engineering Update - March 2022

As the regulations surrounding Covid have relaxed work on The Unknown Warrior has started to return to a more normal pace. Staffing levels at the PRCLT workshops have returned to pre-Covid levels, allowing more work to be undertaken. Added to this the overhaul of 6233 Duchess of Sutherland has been completed and the locomotive has returned to service hauling trains on the national network, both on its planned commitments and standing in successfully for another locomotive.

Engineering Update - May 2020

Work on The Unknown Warrior has continued at various location since the last report.

Construction of 5551 continues at a number of locations.

Physical work on 5551 has been very slow since the last report as can be expected due to the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic outbreak. Virtually all our suppliers have had to close down or if they are still open they are working with reduced staffing levels and only working on safety critical or key work projects. Unfortunately for us, whatever we think of 5551 we do not fit into these categories!

Engineering Up-date - May 2019


Since the last Engineering report review we finally gained access to the former Boiler Shop at Crewe Heritage Centre which enabled us to vacate the Main Hall area which we had occupied since arrival at Crewe back in October 2018. The actual moving date was 18th April 2019 just prior to the Easter Bank Holiday.

Engineering up-date - July 2018

Locomotive Frame Assembly

Work continues on the construction of The Unknown Warrior at number of locations.

Following the report in the last Warrior we have seen work re-started at Llangollen Railway Engineering, but not at the speed we had hoped. At least progress is being made.

We continue to work with Llangollen Engineering to establish a work schedule for the completion of the locomotive chassis.

45551 BOILER UPDATE!

Crown stays all drilled and we have now moved onto drilling the 1,600 side stays. Trial fitting of the copper firebox will then follow.

Engineering up-date - May 2018 2018

Locomotive Frame Assembly

Work continues on the construction of The Unknown Warrior at number of locations.

I have said before that building a full size steam locomotive is not an easy task. The past 3 months have been one of increasing frustration due to delays in supply of parts from suppliers or poor quality work which has led to the rejection of a number of components that were not of sufficient quality to be used on The Unknown Warrior. This will have an effect on the assembly of the locomotive as the parts are long lead time replacements.
